Mini remote puzzle

I have a Bolt and 2 minis - bedroom kitchen. The bedroom remote had become very sluggish requiring repeated presses to go from function to function. I brought the kitchen remote into the bedroom and it worked perfectly. Also the bedroom remote worked fine in the kitchen - of course I switched them. But why? both remotes are identical - I checked out the part numbers. I put fresh batteries in both. When the bedroom remote is trying to do something on the bedroom tv and not working the light at the top that usually flashes orange or yellow, flashes red.

Mystery?

Tivo Bolt + Xbox One S HDMI Passthru

Hey guys & gals just a bit of a heads up. So far when passing content via Tivo Bolt's HDMI to the new Xbox One S HDMI passthru it seems to only accept 1080p signals-- Then the Xbox One S upscales the video to 4K. Anyone thinking to use the Xbox's UI overlay & it's minor voice controls to command their TiVo should be aware of this. (FYI you can still voice command the TiVo without using the Passthru, but this has always been possible even with my old Xbox One) -- The UI overlay and greater app selection within a combined environment TiVo + Xbox under 4K is what I'm after.

Anyways..

After connecting the Tivo Bolt to the Xbox One S and you go to video settings on the Tivo, you can only select 1080p. TiVo Bolt says 4K 2160 is not supported as I found out today. This limit also applies for things like 4K Amazon Fire TV box, or Direct TV4K. I would assume the same for RoKu 4K and the rest.

This story/issue is a bummer to be honest. :) After researching the Xbox One S alot this is a small gotcha that I didn't catch. It also seems others are also becoming aware of this limitation.

On reddit for example.

https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/com...in_xbox_one_s/

https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/com...k_passthrough/

Also, Xbox support and news sites don't list this 1080p limit on passthru as far as I can tell, and as far as my own experience so far has shown - It won't broadcast as a 4K input or accept a native 4K input on it's passthru port.

http://news.xbox.com/2016/08/02/xbox-one-s-4k-hdr/

https://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-...-on-xbox-one-s

You don't really have to read all that to confirm for yourself - but if you want and do read the links, maybe you'll spot something I and others haven't.

Anyways - lets assume that there is a 1080p limit on the Xbox One S passthru. What are the guesses of the cause?

Is the actual hardware port limited via software? NON HDCP 2.2? HDMI speeds?

Possibly DRM or some type of data transfer security? If so is that DRM on the Xbox One S side or TiVo (or other cable box like DirectTV 4K)?

Asking these questions because I'm considering now returning the Xbox One S for my money back.

Yes the Xbox One S can do the apps in 4K that TiVo can. (Well some of them till updates happen) But I just don't like compromising my systems compatibility scheme - and having to use one device or another for various functions. Even if the Xbox One S 4K upscale is really good. (As has been reported) Kinda defeats my purpose of buying 4K stuff and HDCP 2.2 qualified products to begin with.

Anyways I thought people should know if you already don't know. I do like the Xbox One S overall - but this small detail just puts a damper on my system plans.

Thoughts?

Prayers for a software update? From responsible party? If that's all it is, haha :(

Question about when tuners are full

First post in this forum - I believe this is a very simple question, and will make most of you roll your eyes. Be gentle. :-)

Used a couple of TiVos years ago - loved them. Went with Cox's Record 6 a few years ago and thinking about coming back to Bolt.

However, I'm spoiled on 6 tuners, and of course Bolt only has 4. Here's my question: If I have 5 new shows playing at the same time, I know it'll only record the 4 shows that are highest up on the Season Pass list. However, I seem to have in my head from past TiVos I had that if that 5th show repeats, TiVo would record it...even if I had the season pass as "record new shows only." Essentially, it would record the repeat since it knew it couldn't record it when it was new because of full tuners.

Am I crazy? Does it work that way? Or would I just have to know that I have to change the Season Pass for that 5th show to record "New and Repeat?" That seems like a pain. I realize I'm spoiled, but I have to think of these things. (I realize the Roamio Pro has 6, but too pricey.)

Thanks for your help, all. Back to your normally-scheduled deep TiVo questions...

Netflix is NOT working...

For some reason Netflix will not work on my Bolt. The TV automatically changes to 4K output when I hit Netflix on the TiVo.

After it loads I scroll through what I want to play and hit play. It loads and plays one second of the movie/show I selected and then this pops up on my screen.

Any idea how to fix this? I have a Sony TV and had to turn off Enhanced HDMI since it always blacked out the screen when FF/RW.

Could this be messed up because I have Standard HDMI selected?

New to TiVo, trying to get on board!

My gf and I are going to be getting out on our own for the first time. We have a house rented that we're moving into in a few weeks. Im trying to get our stuff sorted out ahead of time.

Im going to be getting cable tv and internet, she insists she needs a DVR. The cable provider we're going with offers a DVR bundle for $30 a month extra, which feels like too much added onto our bill. TiVO's fee, if paid yearly, amounts to about $12.50/mo which is way better, so here I am. I figure it'll also be better than paying rental fees on a cable tuner box and stuff, too.

So, what I plan to do at first... due to initially not wanting to sink too much money in when we have other expenses... Im going to hook up the Bolt to the main tv in the living room, coax to Bolt, HDMI from Bolt to TV. That should immediately take care of the main TV. That seems pretty straight forward.

My bigger concern is having the Bolt on other devices/tv's. I dont plan on buying any minis at first because it's too expensive all at once.

1) We're going to have wifi in the house, so we should be able to stream live TV to my iPhone/her Android, right? How about laptops?

2) On the hookup instructions on tivo.com, it mentions that wireless is not supported when connecting to a mini. (https://www.tivo.com/shop/bolt-detail#section-six) step four. Does this mean that, say in the future, we buy a tivo mini for a bedroom TV, and we run an ethernet cable from the bolt to the mini, we'll no longer be able to stream to our phones through wifi? What does it mean when it says wireless not supported when connecting to a mini?

3) It looks like the Bolt only has one ethernet port on the back, does that mean I need to buy a router to have multiple minis?

4) What if we have a TV that is factory equipped with wifi capability? Do we need to buy a mini, or can we just stream to the tv?

Thanks in advance for any help! Im pretty tech savvy, but never did anything at all with DVR's.

Has anyone purchased a refurbished Bolt from Tivo Outlet?

Wondering if anyone has had any issues with their refurbished boxes purchased from the outlet or if I should just bite the bullet with the extra $50 for a brand new one.

V312 Error

I tried to watch HBO Go tonight (and tested Netflix) but I got this error about my apps loading .... What is this about and how long does it take? Thankfully I have a Roku.

I just checked one of my minis and it worked there. So only my Bolt has the error.

Clear QAM 256...

Can the Tivo Bolt read Clear Qam Channels?

I live in a community where they provide 177 SD, Digital, & HD channels, and their service isnt encrypted.

I had a Roamio and it picked up, all the digital and HD channels.

Bought the Bolt, and I cant find a channels scan option anywhere.

Is it possible? Or should I return it? I tried both digital cable and antenna, with no success.

Any ideas guys?

Tivo Suggestions - SD/HD

When I received my Bolt last week, the Tivo Suggestions feature worked out fairly well (was even better since I started rating shows). The only issue was it kept defaulting to the SD versions of all the channels. To remedy this issue, I deselected all of the SD channels that had HD equivalents from the ISP.

Now, my Bolt will still record suggestions, but only on the non HD channels still. I tried disabling Tivo Suggestions -> Reboot -> Enable Suggestions -> Reboot, but the issue persists.

Is this working as intended, or should I try something else to get it to record on HD channels?

Thanks.

Bolt and Charter

My Bolt on Charter cable has been fine. But over the last few weeks, I'm getting some minor pixelation on HD channels. SD are fine. Charter now tells me they want to try tuner adapters. Note: This also happens on my XL4. Charter tells me that's all they can do. If that fails, the wife will have me back on Dish....

It's not bad... just reminds me of one of the reasons I left Dish.

It was my understanding that the tuning devices were not needed.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Remote Viewing

I do travel and liked my Dish receiver with a built in Slingbox. Worked fine. Like others, did not like the high cost of Dish Network. So I moved back to cable and Tivo.

BOLT Remote Viewing Cons
  • Records all – and many cases does NOT delete the recording when done
  • 20 second delay to start – not a biggie… but no other remote devices do this
  • BUFFERING ALL THE TIME – This is a biggie

BOLT Remote Viewing Pros
  • None

MY NETWORK:
Speedtest.net ----- 61 Mbps download 4.75 up.

What I have tried….
  • Manually adding the ports to my router
  • Connect my BOLT directly to my router
  • Adding it to the DMZ Zone (bypassing any port issues)
  • Also tried adding it to the “media prioritization” (QOS) on my new Linksys router.

FIX:
Purchased a Slingbox. Accepted default settings for my network.

TESTING PROCESS
Using my phone…
From a remote, good Wi-Fi network, I connected to my BOLT and selected a live TV channel. It opened and started and the buffering started. Plays for a few seconds.. Buffers for a few, plays for a few, buffers for a few. On and on…
CLOSE out of the TIVO app
Launch my Slingbox app on same phone and network
Selected the same live TV channel… works fine, ZERO buffering.

Comments...
The Slingbox is not perfect. They added adds to the bottom of the screen. Easy to remove via your host file in Windows. But its way above what I can get TIVO to do.

If I missed anything to get the TIVO to stop buffering, please chime in.

Thanks!!

When I login through my browser (I'm not at home) it says my Bolt is not online. But that is not true. It is on and it connects to Tivo with no problem. How can I access the shows recorded on my Bolt? It is OTA only.

Fios says we must have at least 1 HD box?!?!?!

Parents just moved. They had RCN with Tivo box previously. Verizon Fios installed Wednesday. They hate the Fios interface and want their Tivo back! A Bolt plus mini would suit them perfectly.

Chatted with Fios to confirm cost of cablecard rental. They are claiming that at least one HD box at $12/month is required. So that would be $17/month to Fios. With the 14.99 Tivo service charge that eliminates any cost savings, and makes Tivo a bit to costly after the hardware investment.

Has anyone else experienced this?

My 2TB Bolt Mini Review - Streaming Related

Finally got to mess with it some more, not using much since no OTA recordings right now. Not too worried about commenting on OTA or the SW anyways, Tivo kinda is what it is if you have used other versions.

Amazon - 1080p HD streaming max right now, but the Bolt outputs 4k/24. Looks great.
Vudu - No UHD yet, HDX looks real good and it is output at 4k/24.
Youtube - HD stuff looks as good as I expect on a 65"
Netflix - One of the best devices IMO if you have UHD Netflix service since you get 4k/24 output.

All in all, this is a great all in one streaming device IMO. Id love to see additions for Amazon UHD and Vudu UHD, that would nicely round this thing out.

Factory Reset

So I was reading that the way to fix an app issue (not loading) is to do a factory reset. If I were to do that, would I have to re-pair my Cable card and such? Or does it just wipe everything?

Can I reprogram the skip button on a Bolt?

$

I've made the jump straight from a Series 3 HD XL to the Bolt and I'm annoyed with the change in behavior to the skip button. In live TV with the Series 3 I could press the skip button twice to go all the back 30 minutes. With the Bolt it looks like I need to FF in reverse and then hit the skip button several times until I'm back 30 minutes.

Is there a way to reprogram the old behavior or am I missing an easier way to go all the way back 30 minutes in live TV?

Replacement HD for the Bolt

Okay, so I thought I did enough research to replace my 500 GB drive with a "supported" 2TB.

My choice was a : Samsung Seagate 2TB (ST2000LM003)

As it turns out, this was a BAD choice. In 2 weeks it had multiple reboots, 4 flashing lights, loss of the ability to run Apps on my TiVo and finally the fatal green screen of death boot loop.

I put my 500GB back in and things have been smooth sailing.

What 2TB/3TB should I buy that would be able to stay functional and reliable?

The only one I have seen people mention was this one ... https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Toshiba/MQ03ABB300/

I have never used that site, and I do not want to make another mistake and loss of time/return (maybe money) just to swing and miss again.

Thanks a ton. I am loving my TivO setup .... when it works.

What do I look for to tell if CableCard is properly paired?

I have been having the "this screen is displayed on behalf of your cable provider" screen pop up occasionally and I am fairly sure my CableCard is not properly paired. Which screen should I be looking at, and what info on it, should I use to tell me whether or not pairng is correct?

Considering Upgrade Question

$

I have been using a couple of Premiers for 4 years with comcast cable and they have been awesome. To be more accurate 3 years were awesome and the first year really sucked. Tivo software had a lot of trouble dropping recordings and comcast took forever to get the cable card situation figured out. Now that I have it stable I do not want to screw it up but would like to upgrade to some new hardware.

So now my question. I am considering a single Bolt with 1 or 2 Mini's. We have less people in the house so 4 tuners is good. If I do the upgrade do I have work with Comcast at all during the process? Basically do I need to pair the cablecard with the new device? It has been so long I do not remember if the card is just attached to my account or I actually have to call comcast during the process.

Thanks in advance.

Path to upgrade from Lifetime Series 3 HD to Bolt

I'm currently running a flawless 1TB Series 3 HD Tivo.

I just got an LG OLED 4K.

So I'm itching to upgrade the Tivo.

I tried the Roamio OTA 1TB + Tivo Stream.

But I was disappointed in the Stream could not "Stream" much of anything outside of home (only in home or Copy to phone).

It was close to $500 total.

The TV has many 4K streaming services built in.

It seemed like a lot of money to skip commercials. I don't think I'd use the 30% speed up option much.

The Bolt does add speed, one integrated box [for the almost useless streaming that I might use on occasion], 4K Stream Services (some that I don't have). And possible future features. So I returned the Roamio.

But $849 is still little bit hard to swallow (1 TB Bolt with "All in").

Am I missing something else the Bolt does that will make it worth the upgrade?

Are there any deals that make price a little easier to swallow?

I realize the Series 3 HD won't last forever either (8 years so far I think)
